What can a rocker babe wear to an office job?

If you’re a rocker babe, have tattoos and/or you loooove wearing dark colors, and have no idea what to wear, that still feels very you, to your office job this post will give you some ideas.

I had jobs that allowed me to wear anything I wanted, show off my tattoos and piercings and wear converse, but when I had a job that required wearing collar shirts, covering up my tattoos, removing my piercings…wearing heels! I had a bit of a crisis. I couldn’t figure out what to wear.

I bought a few pieces here and there, tried my best to put cute outfits together, but it felt like I was wearing a costume, it made me feel very weird. I then had an aha! moment.

I finally realized that if I had to wear long sleeves (to cover the tattoos), collar shirts (cause that was mandatory) and black or dark blue pants, I was going to make them work for ME, I was determined to find collar shirts that looked like ME but were also appropriate for the office.

I bet you feel the same way, and it’s not because you don’t know how to dress, it’s because self expression is important to you, whatever your style is, you know it’s not just fashion, is something that you wear because it says something about you. Having somebody saying what you can and can’t wear can be hard, because you feel restricted, you fear you may be perceived as a different person, you think the real you won’t shine if you wear that dang plain white collar shirt!

This may sound dramatic for some, but not for those who understand how important self expression is, you’re not being dramatic and you are not overreacting, you just need to find a new way to express yourself within the “restrictions” and office can have.

So yeah, you don’t have to stop being a badass rocker babe, you just have to find the pieces that will create rad outfits you love that are OK for your job, here are some suggestions.

If you have neck or arm tattoos you can cover them by:

A)  wearing a fitted long sleeve, with a bit of a high neck (without being a turtleneck) shirt, under a short sleeve shirt/blouse
B)  wearing cardigans
C)  wearing a button-up long sleeve shirt/blouse with a nice pattern
D)  wearing a sweater that’s not too big for your, you don’t wanna look frumpy
Some jobs require that you wear collar shirts, but you are allowed to pick any color and pattern you want, so this is were you can shine!
If you are not being forced to wear collar shirts that’s even better, you have more options.

If wearing color is not an issue for you, that’s great but I know a lot of rocker babes are somewhat scared of doing it, so instead of going for all the black shirts, try to go for white ones that have black patterns, and then try to pick muted colors, then add some patterns, etc.

Before I start showing you actual pieces, here are some basic silhouettes that can help you put outfits together.

Now let’s see some real pieces so you can really get inspired… maybe start a Pinterest board with the ones you like, so you can then put together outfit ideas, instead of buying many pieces and then not knowing how to make them work.

If you wanna go for a bold pattern or bight color but you are still not sure if you will feel comfortable, you can wear a cream, black or gray cardigan, that will tone it down a bit, it’ll be like your safety blanket. At some point during the day, if you feel more confident you can always take the cardigan off.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a size 2 or 12, try not to buy a sweater that’s too big on you, that will only make you look frumpy

What if you’re on a budget?
Don’t you worry, you can print out the pieces you like on 1 or 2 sheets and take them with you when you go shopping, go to second hand shops, check out some discount shops and try to find pieces that have a similar cut/shape to the ones you like.

Loly in the sky
Shoes can be expensive so if you’re on a budget you can buy 2 or 3 pairs, these styles go with almost anything!
If you are being told to wear heels and you have no idea how to walk in them, don’t panic just buy wedges, you won’t have any troubles with them 😉
Don’t forget!
Think of the skirt/pants as the uniform, and be creative with your shirts and shoes, think comfort and self expression, but obviously keep it “acceptable” whatever that may be for your job.
